A Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department deputy shot a man who was allegedly wielding a handgun wile riding a bicycle Monday night, authorities said.
The incident involving a South L.A. deputy occurred around 9:40 p.m. in the 8700 block of Budlong Avenue, said L.A. County sheriff’s Deputy Grace Medrano. The area is unincorporated Westmont, east of Inglewood and north of Hawthorne.
Medrano said deputies attempted to pull over a bicyclist for a traffic stop, but the man did not comply with the commands and fled on his bicycle while he allegedly had a handgun.
“The suspect got off the bicycle still armed with the handgun,” Medrano alleged, and the deputy-involving shooting occurred. The man suffered gunshot wounds to his torso. His condition is unknown.
A handgun was recovered, and no deputies were injured, Medrano said.
The man is in a local hospital, Medrano said, but there was no information on what he would be charged with, and the incident is still under investigation.
